How is the Jewish Holiday of Passover a foreshadow of Jesus? Here we will address this.
Israel was held in bondage by the Egyptians and Moses came to deliver them. Here we see Moses as a type of Christ in that Christ is our deliverer from sin and death. In Exodus 12:1-28 we read of when God sent ten plagues to Egypt. The tenth plague was for all the firstborn in Egypt to be killed. The Israelites were instructed to take an unblemished lamb, slaughter it, and take a bunch of hyssop and apply some of the blood of the lamb to the lintel and the two doorposts of their home. Then the Lord says, "when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will come upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt" (verse 13). Notice that the Israelites were not spared because of their good deeds or moral virtue. The spirit of death did not go into the houses to determine who was holy and who was a sinner. No, once the blood was seen, death passed over the home and those in it.
This event described here in Exodus was a foreshadowing of Jesus, the Lamb of God. You see, we broke God's law, the ten commandments, and are unable to justify ourselves. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Death is something that is earned. But Jesus, who was the unblemished (sinless) Lamb, was sacrificed to pay this penalty of sin-death. Just as the blood of the lamb in Exodus was applied to the lintel and doorposts of the Israelites' home, so we can apply the blood of the Lamb of God to our souls when we choose to accept our pardon from death so graciously given by our Lord by repenting and trusting in Him. And just as death passed over the Israelites not because of their good works or because they deserved it, so also does death pass over us, not because of our good works but because of the goodness of He who paid for it. As Christians we, spiritually, have the blood of the Lamb on the doorposts of our soul and that is all that is required for death to passover us- eternally. There, also is a difference- though the tenth plague was avoided for the Israelites, they still died eventually (many in the wilderness and many, perhaps, from just old age or what have you). The point is, the blood of lambs, which were sacrificed to atone for the sins of Israel for generations annually, were only able to atone for a limited time. Our Lord Jesus, the True Lamb of God, was able to atone for eternity, once and for all (read Hebrews 10:1-18).
The rest of Romans 6:23 says, "but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." A gift is given, not earned. Eternal life is given. WOW! The best thing in life- eternal life- is free!
If you would like to have the free gift of eternal life, you must repent (genuine sorrow over your sin that has separated you from the Father) and trust in Jesus. If you did this please know that life doesn't suddenly become trial-less. In fact, now Satan is your enemy. I encourage you to read your Bible every day and find a Bible believing church.
